Maryville rallies to beat Huntingdon 10-7 in GSAC Tournament
MARYVILLE, Tenn. --- Huntingdon College's baseball team dropped their Great South Athletic Conference tournament contest, 10-7, to Maryville College after leading by five runs on Friday. The Hawks will play LaGrange College in the GSAC tournament elimination game tomorrow, Apr. 30, beginning at 4 p.m. Eastern.
Second-seeded Maryville scored nine unanswered runs on Friday night at Scotland Yard defeating the Hawks in their GSAC tournament opener. Huntingdon lost control of the game in the bottom of the 7th inning after allowing seven runs to the Scots.
Huntingdon took a four run advantage, 4-0, over Maryville into the bottom of the 4th inning highlighted by GSAC's Freshman of the Year Joseph Odom's home-run. The Scots cut the margin down to three runs, 4-1, after the bottom of the fourth.
The Hawks responded to the Scots' run in the fourth by scoring three more runs, 7-2, in the top of the 5th inning extending Huntingdon's lead by five.
Junior John Rice had only allowed two Maryville runs until the bottom of the 7th inning. Maryville rallied scoring seven runs, 9-7, for their first lead of the game ending Rice's night. The Scots added one more run in the bottom of the 8th inning, 10-7, securing the comeback win against Huntingdon.
Rice (6-3) got the start pitching 6 1/3 innings allowing seven earned runs on twelve hits in his third loss of the season. In the 7th inning, Rice was replaced by junior Caleb Cofield after struggling to get the Scots out. Cofield only managed to record one out while allowing one run in his outing. Senior Ryan Harrison followed Cofield pitching 1 1/3 innings giving up one run on one hit with one strike out against Maryville.
At the plate, the Hawks recorded 10 total hits with sophomore Evan Agnew (2-for-4), Caleb Astin (2-for-4) and senior Stephen Bishop (2-for-4) all pacing the team with two hits in the loss. Bishop led the Hawks with two-RBI's against the Scots.
Huntingdon (21-16) is set to play LaGrange (21-20) in Maryville, Tennessee on Saturday, Apr. 30, with the first pitch at 4 p.m. Eastern in the GSAC tournament elimination game.
