Jonathan Zafra Promoted To Head Women's Wrestling Coach
MONTGOMERY, Ala.- Huntingdon Director of Athletics Eric Levanda has announced the promotion of Jonathan Zafra, former Assistant Women's Wrestling Coach, to Head Coach of the program effective immediately.
Zafra led the Hawks throughout the entirety of the 2025-2026 season, overseeing the Hawks 2nd place finish in their inaugural season competing in the SLIAC Conference Championship.
"Jonathan has made a good impression on our current women's wrestling team and that positive relationship weighed heavily in making the decision to elevate him," shared Levanda. "He believes in our wrestlers and they trust him as well. Our program is still young and I'm glad we have someone like Jonathan to foster the continued development of our women as both wrestlers and students."
"I'm very grateful for this opportunity to take leadership of such a great group of athletes that strive to be great," Zafra stated. "I'm proud of the progress we've made thus far, but the goal is to continue to grow entering year four."
Hailing from Asheville, North Carolina, Zafra wrestled for and graduated from Montreat College with a bachelor's degree in Educational Studies in May of 2023. As a student-athlete, Zafra was able to gain immense experience coaching wrestling, volunteering with the OBX Factory Wrestling Club and Manteo High School.
In addition to volunteer coaching, Jonathan was employed by the Buncombe County school system in North Carolina, initially as a substitute teacher, but most recently as an Assistant Teacher. In these roles, Zafra was able to maintain and develop positive working environments and relationships with students. Wrestling for over 10 years, Zafra brings a wealth of knowledge of the sport. As a senior at Manteo High School, Jonathan became the champion of his region before finishing as a state finalist in North Carolina. Asides from his experience wrestling at the high school and collegiate level, Zafra, as a Dual Citizen athlete, was able to train with the Peruvian National Team.
This past season, Zafra led the Hawks to another monumental season, seeing three different wrestlers place at regionals, tying the most in program history.
