Hawks Close Non-Conference Play With Loss At Sewanee
SEWANEE, Tenn.- Ending the 2024 year with their final non-conference game of the season, Huntingdon women's basketball wrapped up their two-game stint at Sewanee with a matchup against the host Tigers. Following a highly-contested first quarter, Sewanee pulled away in the second and third to claim the 81-61 victory.
First Quarter
- The Hawks got things underway with a hot start offensively, with baskets from Kinstin Davis, Briana McGruder, and Deshauna Foote giving Huntingdon an early 7-2 lead by the 8 minute mark
- Briana Stuckey followed another basket from Davis to push the Hawks lead to 11-4 with 6 minutes remaining in the quarter
- The Tigers cut Huntingdon's lead to as little as 13-9, but Kinstin Davis remained hot, drilling a shot from deep to bring the lead back to 16-9 by the 4 minute mark
- Charity Shaw's layup at the 1:08 mark brought an end to a 6-0 Sewanee run, keeping the Hawks in front 18-15.
- The Tigers scored 4 unanswered points to hold a 19-18 lead entering the second quarter
Second Quarter
- Sewanee opened the second quarter on a 6-2 run to extend their advantage to 25-20 by the 8:39 mark
- Huntingdon continued to battle, bringing the deficit to as little as 29-27 following a Briana Stuckey layup at the 5:28 mark. Deshauna Foote followed up with a layup of her own with 4:41 remaining in the half to tie the score at 29
- Sewanee closed the half on a 13-2 run, taking a 42-31 lead into halftime
Third Quarter
- Stuckey put the first points on the board to open the half, but Sewanee responded with a 7-0 run to push their lead to 49-33 by the 7:50 mark
- The Hawks pieced together a 5-0 run of their own to make the score 49-38 by the 7:12 mark, but another 7-0 Tiger run left the Hawks down 56-38 with 5 minutes remaining in the quarter
- Over the next four minutes, Sewanee opened up a 12-2 run to lead 68-40 with 1:38 left in the quarter.
- Briana McGruder finished through contact and converted an and-one to stop the bleeding, but a Sewanee triple in the final 10 seconds brought the score to 71-43 entering the final quarter
Fourth Quarter
- Four unanswered points from Deshauna Foote cut the deficit to 71-47 by the 9:24
- Destiny Grider found her stride in the final quarter as well, scoring four consecutive points to bring the score to 75-51 with 7 minutes remaining
- Despite late baskets from Dalyce Sanders and Payton Corbett, the Hawks would fall 81-61 to the 6-6 Tigers
With this loss, the Hawks close non-conference play with a 4-5 record. They begin CCS play at home on January 4th, squaring off with the LaGrange Panthers. Tip-off is set for 2:00 PM CT.
