SANDESTIN, Fla. – Senior Stephen Shephard shot the second best round of his collegiate career on Monday and the Huntingdon men's golf team climbed two spots to second in Round 2 of the Golfweek DIII Fall Invitational.
Shephard fired a 4-under-par 67 in the second round and is tied for first with a 4-under 138 after 36 holes. Monday's round at the Raven Golf Club was one stroke off of Shephard's best collegiate round of 66.
As a team, the Hawks shot 3-under 281 in the second round to move from fourth to second in the 18-team tournament. Entering Tuesday's final round, Huntingdon is six strokes out of first with a 2-over 570.
In a field that features 13 nationally ranked teams, top-ranked Emory leads with a 4-under 564. Four strokes behind Huntingdon, 12th-ranked Southwestern University is third with a 6-over 574.
Southwestern's Sutherland Stith and Guilford's James Mishoe are tied for first with Shephard.
All five Huntingdon golfers are within 10 strokes of first after two rounds. Behind Shephard, senior Henry Gee is four strokes out of first and tied for 10th with an even-par 142. Gee shot 71 in each of the first two rounds.
Junior Drew Mathers shot his best collegiate round with a 2-under 69 on Monday. Mathers is six strokes out of first and tied for 22nd with a 2-over 144.
Senior Mark Connelly is nine strokes out of first and tied for 33rd with a 5-over 147. Connelly shot a 3-over 74 in the second round. Freshman Carson Whitton is 10 strokes off the lead and tied for 39th with a 6-over 148. Whitton shot 3-over 74 on Sunday and Monday.
Coming Up: Huntingdon will play in the final round of the Golfweek DIII Fall Invitational on Tuesday.
