Hawks Hot Start Continues Against Millsaps

MONTGOMERY, Ala.- Wrapping up the annual Hawks Classic tournament with their second game in two days, Huntingdon men's basketball(4-0) led from end-to-end in an 83-52 victory over the Majors of Millsaps College(1-2 overall).

How it happened

First Half

  • Keeping the theme of fast starts, Nate Johns and BJ Brown led the Hawks to a 9-2 lead by the 17:24 mark
  • Millsaps battled back, cashing in on consecutive possessions to cut the deficit to 9-6 less than a minute later, but two free throws from Randall Davis kept Huntingdon in front.
  • Getting fouled on a three point attempt, the Majors drilled all three attempts to bring the score to 13-11 with 15:34 remaining in the half
  • Watching their lead get cut to as little as one point, an and-1 finish from Myles Murphy pushed the Hawks lead back to five, 17-12, with 13 and a half minutes to go until halftime
  • A triple from Martise Jackson on Huntingdon's ensuing possession sparked a 9-0 run for the Hawks, extending their lead to 26-15 before a Millsaps layup momentarily stopped the bleeding at the 9 minute mark
  • Millsaps converted on two attempts from the charity stripe to bring the deficit back down to single digits, 31-23, by the 4:24 mark, but Jaylen Washington led the Hawks on a 14-2 run to close the half, giving Huntingdon a 45-25 lead heading into the second half

Second Half

  • As the second half got underway, the two teams got things going by trading baskets, with a tip-in from Nate Johns making the score 51-31 with 16 and a half minutes to go
  • Continuing to trade baskets, the monotony broke at the 13:17 mark, as RayQuan Taylor sparked a 7-0 run, with baskets coming from Keyshawn Dickey and Jaylen Washington, to up Huntingdon's lead to 60-33 with 9:42 remaining in the game
  • With about 7 and a half minutes to go, BJ Brown found a soft spot in the Millsaps defense, cashing in on six free throws in as many attempts to push the lead to 70-41
  • As the game drew near, the Hawks continued to pour it on, as a Myles Johnson three-pointer was followed by an alley-oop slam by Marcus Townsend to hand Huntingdon the 83-52 win.

Key Notes

  • Huntingdon maintained a groove on offense all night, shooting 46% from the field for the game
  • The Hawks dominated the glass, outrebounding Millsaps 53-35
  • 42 of Huntingdon's 83 points came from inside the paint
