Hawks Go Coast To Coast Against Welch In Home Opener

MONTGOMERY, Ala.-  Taking the court for the first time at home this season, Huntingdon men's basketball(3-0 overall) defeated the Flames of Welch College(0-8 overall) 108-61.

How it happened

 

First Half

  • Coming out of the gates hot, baskets from BJ Brown and Jaylen Washington put the Hawks ahead 8-2 by the 17:15 mark.
  • The Flames tried to claw back into it with a run to bring the score to 8-6, but another layup from Brown sparked an 11-0 Huntingdon run, featuring baskets from Randall Davis, RayQuan Taylor, and Keyshawn Dickey to bring the score to 19-6 by the 12:24 mark
  • Huntingdon continued to pour it on, as Martise Jackson and Tate Goolesby added layups to extend the lead to as much as 29-8 before a Welch triple cut stopped the bleeding and made the score 29-11 with 9 minutes remaining in the half
  • Another Welch three pointer brought the score to 32-16 inside the final six minutes, but Huntingdon responded with a 19-7 run to close the half with a 51-23 lead in hand

Second Half

  • Through the first three minutes of the second half, the two teams traded baskets. Nonetheless, the Hawks still lead 56-28 by the 17:24 mark
  • DaQuan Hawkins answered a 5-0 Welch run with a shot from deep, sparking an 8-1 Huntingdon run that grew the Hawks lead to 66-34.
  • Five consecutive points from Donovan Wilson with 11 minutes remaining extended the Huntingdon lead to 80-44
  • As the game drew near, the Hawks found themselves in a position where nearly every member of the roster was able to score. Outscoring the Flames 57-38 in the second half, a turnaround jumpshot from Richie Hicks put a stamp on Huntingdon's 108-61 win

  • The Hawks outrebounded Welch 67-31
  • Huntingdon's bench was electric, scoring 75 of the teams points
  • Points in the paint were easy to come by for the Hawks, as the team gathered 54 shots inside compared to the Flames' 16.
  • Huntingdon never trailed in this matchup
