Hawks Split Double-Header With Belhaven To Close Out The Series
JACKSON, Miss.- After suffering a 2-0 loss at the hands of the Blazers last night, Huntingdon Baseball returned to action in a double-header with the Blazers to close out the series.
The Hawks dropped the first of the two games in seven innings, falling 17-3 before recovering for a 12-10 win in game three to avoid the sweep. Huntingdon now sits at 17-13 overall with a 6-6 record in conference play.
Game One
Belhaven opened up game one on an absolute tear offensively, scoring nine runs in the first inning after forcing three consecutive Huntingdon outs in the top frame. The Hawks started to claw their way back into the game in the third inning, with Cade Morgan's triple scoring Byron McLain before Sam Kelley returned the favor to Morgan with a RBI single, but the deficit remained at 9-2. Ty Pruitt crossed home plate off a RBI double from McLain in the fourth to bring the score to 9-3, but the Blazers answered with four runs of their own to extend the lead to 13-3. They tacked on four more runs in the fifth inning to put the Hawks away in seven, 17-3.
Game Two
The second game started much like the first, as Belhaven opened things up with two runs to grab the early advantage. This time however, the Hawks stormed back in the second inning, with Blayne McDaniel and Cade Morgan each driving in runs to give Huntingdon their first lead of the day, 3-2. Their lead grew to 6-2 in the fourth, seeing runs from Brent Cadenhead, Ethan Duhon, and Ty Pruitt as the Hawks distanced themselves. The fifth inning saw much of the same, with Cadenhead, McDaniel, and Duhon each crossing home plate as the Hawks remained in control with a 9-2 lead heading into the sixth inning.
Huntingdon's lead grew to as much as 11-2 in the seventh inning, as Sam Kelley's RBI singleallowed for Duhon and Cadenhead to cross home plate again, but the Blazers quickly followed with four runs of their own in the ensuing frame to bring the score to 11-6. The put through two more runs to cut the deficit to as little as 11-8 entering the ninth inning, but Cadenhead scored yet again on a Blazer error in the top frame, putting the Hawks in front 12-8. Belhaven scored two late runs, but couldn't complete the comeback as Huntingdon walked away victorius, 12-10.
JB Landrum picked up his 5th win of the season in this game, pitching 6 innings, throwing 5 strikeouts in the process. Jable Ramey briefly relieved Landrum before Brent Cadenhead closed things out, recording his 5th save on the year.
The Hawks return to action on Thursday, April 17th as they kick off a home series against the Piedmont Lions. Gametime is set for 7:00 PM CT.
