Baseball Claims Conference Series At Covenant With Two-Game Sweep
LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga.- After dropping the first game against the Scots, Huntingdon Baseball swept today's double-header, picking up 5-2 wins in each contest to clinch their conference-opener on the road.
Game One
The start to today's double-header mirrored that of the standalone game yesterday, with neither squad recording more than one hit per game through the first two innings. Covenant broke the ice in the third inning, drilling a single-run shot over the fence to claim the early lead, but the Hawks matched immediately in the top of the fourth inning, as Sam Kelley crossed home plate on an error. Byron McLain followed with an RBI single that scored Brodie Holcomb, giving Huntingdon their first lead, 2-1. The Hawks lead doubled in the top frame of the fifth, with a sacrifice fly from Cade Morgan scoring Brent Cadenhead before Jabez Sampson made his way home on a throwing error within the same play, bringing the score to 4-1. Blayne McDaniel crossed home plate shortly after on Kelley's groundout, raising the advantage to 5-1. The Scots put in one run in the sixth inning, but the Hawks held on to take the 5-2 victory.
Parker Szush started on the mound for the Hawks and earned his second win of the season, throwing 8 strikeouts while allowing 5 hits in a little more than six innings. Evan Clark relieved Szush before Brent Cadenhead closed on the mound and picked up his second save on the year.
Game Two
The second game got off to a slow start offensively for both teams also, with the score remaining even at 0 through four innings. The first run of the game belonged to the Hawks in the fifth inning, with Sam Kelley scoring Brodie Holcomb on a sacrifice fly to bring the score to 1-0. The Scots followed a scoreless sixth inning with a run in the seventh to even things at 1, but Huntingdon's four-run eighth inning quickly reinstated the Hawks lead. Jabez Sampson got things going with an RBI single to center field, bringing home Byron McLain and give the Hawks a 2-1 lead. Cade Morgan and Brodie Holcomb followed with RBI singles of their own shortly after, scoring Ty Pruitt, Dylan Hyder, and Sampson as Huntingdon's lead swelled to 5-1. Covenant put in a run in the bottom of the eighth inning, but yet again, the Hawks held on to take the victory 5-2 and the series two games to one.
JB Landrum drew the start for Huntingdon and moved to 4-1 on the season, allowing 5 hits and 1 run through 7 innings while striking out 7 Scots. Brent Cadenhead recorded his third save of the season and second on the day, allowing one hit and one run in two innings.
The Hawks return to action at home on March 22nd, kicking off their double-header with Asbury University with a double-header. Games are scheduled for 12:00 and 3:00 PM CT.
