Hawks Baseball Overcomes Slow Start To Defeat Oglethorpe

MONTGOMERY, Ala.- Looking to rebound following their loss to Emory in their first home tournament of the season, Huntingdon baseball welcomed the Stormy Petrels of Oglethorpe University to Neal Posey Field for a midweek matchup.

The Hawks fell behind 5-0 after the first inning, but recovered strongly to take the victory, 10-8.

How it happened

The Stormy Petrels put together a resounding start to this game, scoring five runs on 3 hits in the opening frame to take an early lead. After holding the Hawks without a run to close the inning, their advantage grew to 6-0 entering the bottom of the 2nd.

Huntingdon's first run came late in the second inning, with an error sending Ty Pruitt home to cut Oglethorpe's lead to 6-1 as the third inning got underway. Hawks pitcher Evan Clark took to the mound to start the third inning, bringing a renewed energy to the Hawks dugout with three outs in as many batters. Brodie Holcomb returned the favor to Clark singling through the left side to score Cade Morgan, bringing the score to 6-2. Byron McLain followed Holcomb with a single of his own, with Sam Kelley capitalizing on an Oglethorpe error to cut into the lead even further, 6-3. Runs from Holcomb and McLain closed the inning with the Hawks trailing by just one, 6-5.

Huntingdon kept rolling as the fifth inning got underway, evening the score at 6 off an RBI single from Pruitt. A passed ball in the sixth inning allowed for Jabez Sampson to cross home plate and give the Hawks a 7-6 lead shortly after.

Sampson's run sparked a four run inning for the Hawks, sending Morgan, Kelley, and Holcomb around the bases as Huntingdon's lead grew to 10-6. The Stormy Petrels brought in two runs late, but the Hawks hung on, claiming victory 10-8.

Will Argo started on the mound for Huntingdon, allowing 6 runs on 4 hits through two innings before Evan Clark took to the mound. Clark picked up his first win of the season, allowing just one hit through 3 innings before Parker Szush and Brent Cadenhead finished the game for the Hawks.

The Hawks return to action on February 28th at home, facing off with Fontbonne at home. Gametime is set for 3:30 PM CT.
