Hawks Split With Mt. St. Joseph And Emory

MONTGOMERY, Ala.- Wrapping up their first home tournament of the season with a double-header, Huntingdon baseball moved to 5-4 on the season by defeating the Lions of Mt. St. Joseph 7-5 before falling to Emory University 15-0 in 7 innings.

Game one v. Mt. St. Joseph

The Lions started the game hot at the plate, leaving the top frame of the first inning with 2 runs on as many hits to claim the early advantage. The Hawks put a dent into their lead in their first offensive inning as well, with Sam Kelley's single scoring Jay Davidson to bring the score to 2-1. Scoreless second and third innings for Mt. St. Joseph put the Hawks into prime position to capture the lead, and the Hawks did, first tying things at 2 with Davidson crossing home plate for the second time before Byron McLain's double brought home Cade Morgan. By the start of the fourth inning, the Hawks led 3-2.

Huntingdon added two more runs to their advantage in the bottom of the fourth inning, with Ty Pruitt scoring the first on a passed ball and Brent Cadenhead scoring the second off a sacrifice fly from Cade Morgan. Mt. St. Joseph put two more runs on the board in the 6th inning to cut Huntingdon's lead to 5-4, but another RBI single from Morgan scored Jabez Sampson and pushed Huntingdon's lead to 6-4. The final runs of the game came in the seventh inning, with the Lions pushing one runner through before McLain crossed home plate to give the Hawks the win 7-5.

JB Landrum started on the mound for the Hawks and collected his second win of the season, pitching 4 strikeouts in 4.1 innings. Evan Clark relieved Landrum before Parker Szush entered in the 7th inning. Brent Cadenhead earned the save for Huntingdon, closing the game with only 1 base hit allowed.

Game two v. Emory

Neither of the two teams could find their groove at the plate as the game got underway, with the first base hit coming in the second inning for Emory as they took an early 1-0 lead. The Eagles extended their lead to 3-0 in the third inning, limiting the Hawks to just two base hits through the first 4 innings. A 4 run fourth inning saw Emory's lead grow to 7-0 before two more fifth inning runs pushed their advantage to 9-0. The Hawks tried to battle back, placing multiple runners on the bases, but Emory continued to pour it on, scoring 6 runs in the 7th inning to claim the 15-0 win.

Jable Ramey drew his first loss of the 2025 season, allowing 3 runs on as many hits through 3 innings. Hoot Rathbun, Caleb Griffis, Will Argo, Killean Blackmon, and Lukas Holman each saw time on the mound as the Hawks attempted to come back.

The Hawks return to action on Tuesday, February 25th at home against Oglethorpe. Gametime is set for 3:00 PM CT.
