MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon baseball team scored three runs in the fifth inning and held off Millsaps in the ninth inning for a 3-2 win on Friday.
The Hawks took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning with an RBI from Dakota Beane and a two-run single by Wes Powell. Hunter Long scored on Beane's fielder's choice to tie the game 1-1. Beane and Grant Simera scored on Powell's single to put Huntingdon in front.
The score stood until the top of the ninth when Millsaps loaded the bases with one out and scored one run on a fielder's choice. With two outs and runners at first and third, Millsaps attempted to score on a delayed steal but Huntingdon pitcher Ethan Hess threw out the runner at home plate to end the game.
Hess (1-0) picked up the win in five innings of relief. The freshman scattered eight hits, allowed one earned run, walked two and struck out four.
