FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Two Huntingdon student-athletes were recognized by the USA South Athletic Conference as Athletes of the Week on Monday.
Junior defensive back Peyton DeFleron was named Defensive Player of the Week for football and junior Amy Tyma was named Player of the Week for volleyball. DeFleron's recognition is the first for the Huntingdon defense this season and the fifth overall for the football team. This is Tyma's second recognition of the fall.
DeFleron was recognized for his performance in a 41-35 win over Averett University. In a battle for first place in the conference, DeFleron recorded 10 tackles, one sack and came up with a key interception in the final minutes.
Leading by six points with 2:15 remaining in the game, DeFleron ended Averett's next-to-last possession with an interception at the Huntingdon 33-yard line. DeFleron's interception, along with an interception by Fred Flavors on Averett's final possession, helped seal the win for the Hawks.
For the season, DeFleron is the Hawks' second-leading tackler and is tied for fourth in the USA South with 57 stops. He also has 3.5 tackles for loss, one sack, an interception and a forced fumble this season.
Tyma was recognized for her performance in three victories last week. In wins over Pensacola Christian, Brevard and Piedmont, Tyma totaled 55 kills and 59 digs and 10 service aces.
In a 25-14, 22-25, 25-18, 25-23 win over Pensacola Christian, Tyma recorded 20 kills, a season-high 28 digs and six aces. She followed up with 18 kills, 16 digs and four aces in a 25-21, 25-19, 25-19 win over Brevard and 17 kills and 15 digs in a 25-17, 25-17, 25-16 win over Piedmont.
The win over Piedmont was the 20th of the season for Huntingdon, marking the second straight season the Hawks have reached 20 wins.
For the season, Tyma leads the USA South and is fifth in Division III with 442 kills. She is fifth in the conference with 461 digs.
