In two seasons at Morehead State, Stephens coached the outside receivers and helped the unit improve on its receptions, yards and touchdowns each season. In 2015, the Eagles finished with a 7-4 record, marking the program's first winning season since 2007.

In addition to coaching receivers, Stephens was also the football team's social media coordinator and recruited Georgia, Tennessee, Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky.

From 2012-2014, Stephens coached at his alma mater, Center College. With the Colonels, he coached receivers and tight ends at and was responsible for recruiting Alabama, Georgia and Indiana.

Stephens worked with receiver Max Mazza, who set the Colonels' season record for receiving yards in 2014. The 2014 team posted its first undefeated regular season since 1955 and reached the NCAA playoffs for the second time in four seasons. The 2014 team also set the school record for total offense in a season.

Before entering the coaching ranks, Stephens was a four-year player for the Colonels, seeing time at receiver and defensive back. During his senior season in 2011, Centre reached the postseason for the first time since 1921 and advanced to the second round.

Stephens earned his bachelor's degree in psychology from Centre in 2012.
