MONTGOMERY, Ala—The Huntingdon women's basketball team earned its eighth USA South Athletic Conference win on Sunday, beating Salem 72-59.
With the win, the Lady Hawks improved to 17-5 on the season and 8-3 in the conference while Salem fell to 7-14 and 4-7 in the USA South.
Both teams battled hard to start the game as neither squad led by more than five points. Salem took a 20-17 lead into the second quarter but the Lady Hawks dominated the quarter, outscoring the Spirits 21-5. The Lady Hawks took a 38-25 lead into halftime.
Salem chipped away at Huntingdon's lead in the third but Huntingdon held on to lead by 11 at the end of the quarter.
The Lady Hawks jumped out to a 20 point lead early in the fourth quarter before Salem used a 13-0 run to cut the lead to nine with 2:41 left in the game. The Huntingdon defense held strong and held the Spirits scoreless for the remainder of the game.
Juliette Harp recorded her third straight double-double and her fifth straight game with double-digit points. The sophomore scored 18 points and pulled down 13 rebounds.
Huntingdon travels to LaGrange on Wednesday for a 6:30 p.m. conference matchup.
