Huntingdon rallies past Meredith but ends season with loss to Maryville

LAGRANGE, Ga. – The Huntingdon softball team closed out the season with two games in the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday.

The Lady Hawks rallied to beat Meredith 8-7 in the first game but were eliminated by Maryville 4-3 in the second game.

Maryville (22-18) will play Ferrum (22-16) on Saturday morning. The winner will play Averett (27-18) for the championship. Huntingdon ends the season at 18-26.

In the win over Meredith, Huntingdon fell behind 7-2 in the sixth inning before rallying with six runs in the bottom of the seventh. Freshman Haley Riddle ended the game with a fielder's choice that scored Lindsey Selph.

Trailing 7-2, a two-run double by Brandi Blair and an RBI single by Selph made it a two-run game. A two-run single by Alex Teague tied the game before Riddle drove in the winning run.

Amber Wade drove in Huntingdon's first two runs with a single in the second inning.

Blair and Teague each finished with two RBIs and a run and Selph had one RBI and a run. MacKenzie Smelley scored two runs and Felicia Peoples, Shelby Marsh and Jesse Dunn each scored one run.

Riddle (3-1) picked up the win in 1 1/3 innings of relief. Raina Lanier started the game and struck out seven, walked two, scattered five hits and allowed two earned runs in five innings.

Against Maryville, Huntingdon scored three runs in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead. But the Scots answered with four runs in the sixth inning and held on for the win.

Maggie Porter, Blair and Dunn each scored a run and Kelsie Dardon had one RBI. Smelley was the only Huntingdon player with multiple hits and finished 2-for-3.

Selph (3-6) took the loss in 3 2/3 innings of relief.
