DECATUR, Ga. – The Huntingdon softball team swept Agnes Scott 6-0 and 8-1 on Sunday to clinch a third-place finish in the West Division of the USA South Athletic Conference.
The top six teams in the East Division and the top six teams in the West Division qualify for the conference tournament. The top three seeds in each division will host the bottom three seeds in a best-of-three first-round series next weekend.
The six first-round winners advance to the double elimination portion of the conference tournament in LaGrange, Ga., on April 13-15.
As the No. 3 seed, Huntingdon (15-23, 14-8 USA South) will host Covenant (21-15, 12-10 USA South) in the first round on Friday. Game 1 of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. Should a third game be needed, it will be played on Saturday.
Official stats for Sunday's doubleheader at Agnes Scott (0-30, 0-22 USA South) were not available as of Sunday night. Unofficially, the Lady Hawks put together 28 hits in the doubleheader, including a season-high 16 hits in Game 2. Senior Brandi Blair was 7-for-8 with four doubles and three runs in the doubleheader.
Raina Lanier (5-11) pitched a complete-game shutout in Game 1. It was her third shutout of the season. Lanier finished with 10 strikeouts and allowed five hits in seven innings. Lanier carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning.
In Game 1, Huntingdon scored one run in the fifth inning, two runs in the sixth inning and three runs in the seventh inning. Blair was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs and Kelsie Dardon was 3-for-4 with a double. Amber Wade was 2-for-3 with a run and Lindsey Selph, MacKenzie Smelley and Alex Teague each scored one run.
Selph (3-5) pitched a complete game three-hitter for the win in Game 2. Selph carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning and finished with five strikeouts and three walks.
Huntingdon scored three runs in the first inning, three runs in the fourth inning and two runs in the seventh inning. Blair was 4-for-4 with three doubles and two runs, Samara Miller was 3-for-5 with two runs, Teague was 2-for-4 with a run and Smelley was 2-for-3. Wade scored two runs and Maggie Porter scored one run. In her lone plate appearance, Shelby Marsh had a double.
