Huntingdon softball sweeps Fighting Squirrels

STAUNTON, Va. – The Huntingdon softball team earned a conference sweep over Mary Baldwin College on Sunday. The Lady Hawks took the first game 14-0 in five innings and closed out the day with a 9-3 win in Game 2.

Ashley Johnson led Huntingdon (9-6, 5-1 USA South) with a 5-for-6 performance, three runs, two RBIs and a stolen base in the doubleheader. Jenna Rimensnyder was 2-for-4 with four runs and a stolen base. As a team, seven Huntingdon players stole eight bases in the two games.

In Game 1, Huntingdon scored four runs in the first two innings and blew the game open with seven runs in the fourth inning. The Lady Hawks also took advantage of seven errors by the Fighting Squirrels (0-6, 0-6 USA South)

Heather McGuirk was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs in the game. McGuirk hit her first home run as Hawk with a two-run homer in the fourth inning.

Rimensnyder was 2-for-3 with three runs in the first game, Halleigh DiNicholas was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run and Johnson was 2-for-3 with a RBI and a run.

Lauren Welch had two RBIs and two runs and Justice Fuller and Jade Reynolds each had a RBI and a run. Gabby Alcantar, Holly Ostrander and Brooke Meadows each scored once.

Meadows (4-2) threw a three-hitter, walked three and struck out 11 in five innings to get the win in Game 1. Kaitlynn Wiggins (1-0) picked up the win in Game 2, striking out six, walking five, allowing three runs and scattering seven hits in seven innings.

Johnson was 3-for-3 with two runs and a RBI in the final game and Morgan Goshorn was 2-for-2. Tiffany Taylor had two RBIs and a run and Daisha Henderson and Kala Rooney each had two RBIs.

Jamie Langford recorded a RBI and a run and Rimensnyder, Blake Rowland, DiNicholas, Alicia Gauker and Fuller each scored once. Rowland also had two stolen bases.

Huntingdon plays a conference doubleheader at Ferrum on Monday. Game 1 is set for 1 p.m. The games were postponed from Saturday due to the weather.
