Pines and McLean combine for 35 points in loss at Averett

DANVILLE, Va. – The Huntingdon men's basketball team matched Averett University until late in the first half and fell behind in a 92-77 loss on Saturday.

The Hawks only trailed by a point, 24-23, with 7:35 left in the first half. But Averett closed the first half with a 14-5 run, took a 38-28 lead into halftime and led by double digits for almost the entire second half.

Huntingdon, after trailing by as many as 19 points in the second half, cut the Cougars' lead to nine points in the final five minutes. But the Hawks could not close the gap in the final minutes as Averett maintained control.

Brandon McLean and Kyante Pines combined for 35 points and 21 rebounds in the game. McLean turned in his fifth double-double of the season with 17 points and a career-high 13 rebounds.

Pines just missed a double-double with 18 points and eight rebounds. Pines also had six assists. Cam Boyd added nine points and four assists.

Quick Facts: McLean ranks fourth in the USA South Athletic Conference with 8.3 rebounds per game. As a team, the Hawks lead the USA South and are fifth in Division III with 45.67 rebounds per game.
