Hawks open conference play with win over Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Huntingdon baseball team opened USA South Athletic Conference play with a 5-2 win over Greensboro College on Friday.

The Hawks (3-10, 1-0 USA South) scored five runs in the first four innings and used a strong performance from senior pitcher Zach McGrady to take Game 1 of the three-game series with the Pride (8-5, 0-1 USA South).

McGrady (1-4) pitched his second complete game of the season, striking out six, walking four, scattering six hits and allowing two runs. Both runs came in the first inning.

After giving up five hits and two walks in the first four innings, McGrady held the Pride to one hit and two walks in the final five innings.

The Hawks scored two runs in the first inning on an RBI single by Will Cosby and a sacrifice fly by Josh Hines. Huntingdon took the lead for good in the second inning on an RBI double by Garrett Headley.

Wes Powell and Joseph Calvert drove Huntingdon's final two runs in the fourth inning.

Garrett Breland scored twice and Headley, Calvert and Hines each scored once. Powell was the only Hawk with multiple hits, finishing 2-for-4.

Game 2 of the series is set for 1 p.m. (Central) on Saturday.
